Offenburg, August 11, 2010 – In the first half-year of the 2010 financial year MEDICLIN Aktiengesellschaft (MediClin) achieved sales of EUR 241.0 mill., which is EUR 10.1 mill., or 4.4% more than in the 2009 comparable period. (1 HY 2009: EUR 230.9 mill.).
On Group level the number of nursing days and cases increased by um 1.2% and 0.9%. The occupancy rate rose from 86.3% to 87.2%. The Group operating result of EUR 4.9 mill. declined slightly by EUR 0.4 mill. over the same period last year primarily due to higher expenses for investments and maintenance, but also because of increased staff costs.
The result attributable to shareholders of MediClin AG amounted to EUR 1.5 mill. (1 HY 2009: EUR 2.0 mill.). Un-/diluted earnings per share are EUR 0.03 (1 HY 2009: EUR 0.04).
At the end of the first half-year 2010 MediClin shows cash and cash equivalents amounting to EUR 46.4 mill. (30.06.2009: EUR 46.6 mill.).
Stable development in the segments
In the first half-year of 2010 the post-acute segment saw an increase in sales of 3.7% (1 HY 2010: EUR 136.0 mill.; 1 HY 2009: EUR 131.2 mill). and the acute segment of 5.1% (1 HY 2010: EUR 99.2 mill.; 1 HY 2009: EUR 94.4 mill). The half year operating result of the post-acute segment of EUR 0.8 mill. (1 HY 2009: EUR –1.4 mill.) was EUR 2.2 mill. above the value of the comparable period due to the high occupancy rate. The operating result of the acute segment of EUR 8.4 mill. was below the result of the first half-year of 2009 (1 HY 2009: EUR 9.6 mill.) and contains the result of the medical care centres and therefore also the start-up costs of the centres that were founded in 2010.
Higher investments in 2010
In the first half-year of 2010 Mediclins’ gross investments in non-current asset were EUR 10.8 mill. (1 HY 2009: EUR 8.9 mill). In the same period more medical care centres were opened – in Offenburg and in Lahr/Baden – so that in the meantime MediClin offers medical care in ten centres. Furthermore a day hospital and a psychiatric outpatient clinic were opened, which co-operate closely with the Klinikum Mittelbaden and its Kreiskrankenhaus Rastatt, as well as the Klinik für Kinder und Jugendliche at the Stadtklinik Baden-Baden.
The number of employees in the first half-year of 2010, calculated on the basis of full-time staff, was on average 5,928 full-time employees (1 HY 2009: 5,794 full-time employees) thus being up by 134 full-time employees against the average number of the previous years period.
For the 2010 financial year, the Management Board anticipates sales slightly above the previous year’s level and a result comparable with the previous year.
