MediClin ─ Sales and occupancy rate increased in the first quarter of 2010

Offenburg, May 11, 2010 – Die MEDICLIN Aktiengesellschaft (MediClin) has achieved sales of EUR 118.2 mill. in the first three months of 2010. This is EUR 5.7 mill. or 5,1 % more than in the same period last year (Q1 2009: EUR 112.5 mill.).

The increase in sales could compensate the higher costs, so that the quarterly operating result of the Group improved slightly against the comparable previous year’s value (Q1 2010: EUR -0.02 mill.; Q1 2009: EUR -0.06 mill.). The post-acute segment result improved by EUR 1.3 mill. up to EUR -2.0 mill. (Q1 2009: EUR -3.3 mill.), the acute segment result amounted to EUR 4.1 mill. (Q1 2009: EUR 4.5 mill.).

The comprehensive income attributable to shareholders of MediClin AG was EUR -1.6 mill. (Q1 2009: EUR -1.7 mill.). The un-/diluted earnings per share account for EUR –0.03 (Q1 2009: EUR–0.04).

MediClin shows liquid assets of EUR 53.9 mill. at the end of the period (31.03.2009: EUR 55.6 mill.).

The number of nursing days and the number of cases increase against the figures of the same period last year

In total the number of nursing days and cases increased in the Group by 1.8 % or 10,655 days respectively 1.1 % or 334 cases compared to the first quarter of 2009. The occupancy rate was 86.1% and thus 1.5%-points above the previous year’s value (Q1 2009: 84.6%).

The occupancy rate in the post-acute segment rose to 86.2% (Q1 2009: 83.9%). In the acute segment the number of nursing days increase, the occupancy rate declined to 84.4% (Q1 2009: 86.2%) due to a rise in capacity of beds. The occupancy rate in the business area nursing care was 91.2% (Q1 2009: 90.3%).

The average number of employees in the first quarter of 2010, calculated on the basis of full-time staff, was 5,903 full-time employees (Q1 2008: 5,783 full-time employees).
