Intubation

The most frequent complaint brought before the civil law courts relates to damage to the teeth following general anesthesia, although this problem has receded somewhat into the background in the area of cardioanesthesiology considering the extent and the implications of cardiac surgery.

Neuro-monitoring

During general anesthesia, we monitor the central nervous system routinely by EEG which allows the electrical activity of the brain to be recorded as an expression of the cerebral functional metabolism.

Blood depot serology

A comparison of different heart surgery centers in Germany has brought to light that the administration of foreign blood is handled with particular caution at the MediClin Heart Center Lahr. Whereas foreign blood products were administered in the case of 17-33 percent of patients at the clinics participating in the survey, the MediClin Heart Center Lahr with 18 percent is at the lower end of the spectrum.

Beating heart surgery

To reduce the risk during coronary surgery, the OPCAB method (anesthesia in bypass operations on the beating heart without heart-lung machine) is gaining increasing importance. Consequently, a large proportion of bypass operations are carried out in this way at our hospital. It reduces the potentially damaging effect of extra-corporal circulation such as impairment of coagulation, hemolysis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and neurological deficiencies.
