In general, the health insurance providers assume the costs that arise due to a stay in hospital. However, the health insurance providers charge patients a co-payment of 10 euros per day. This is valid for a maximum of 28 days in a calendar year. The admission and release day are not counted together but are both charged as a whole day.
The following patients are exempt from paying the co-payment according to Article 39, Section 4 of the SGB V:
- Children and young people under 18 years of age
- BG insured patients
- Those injured in war, asylum seekers and those performing their civilian national service
- Inpatients from foreign hospitals
- Preoperative patients
- Patients who present a valid payment receipt
- Women in childbirth (without complications)
